Benefits of Spay & Neuter…
Your pet’s reproductive organs produce hormones that can influence their behavior and overall health. Intact pets are at higher risk for certain cancers and diseases and may display behaviors that can strain your relationship with them. By choosing spay or neuter surgery at Family Vet Services in Coldwater, OH, you can help your pet lead a healthier life and enjoy their companionship for years to come.
Additionally, this surgery plays a vital role in addressing the critical issue of pet overpopulation and homelessness in our community. Many animal shelters are currently overwhelmed, and countless healthy, unwanted pets face the threat of euthanasia. Spaying and neutering dogs and cats are effective ways to help control the pet population, ultimately saving lives.
Both male and female pets can experience significant benefits from timely spay and neuter surgeries. These procedures not only help mitigate undesirable behaviors but also lower the risk of serious health issues. The advantages for your pet include:
For Female Pets:
- Elimination of heat cycles, which can be a messy and frustrating experience
- Reduced urge to roam in search of a mate, decreasing the likelihood of escapes
- Diminished urine-marking behavior
- Lower chances of developing mammary gland tumors
- No risk of pyometra, a serious uterine infection
- Reduced risk of uterine or ovarian cancers
For Male Pets:
- Decreased aggressive tendencies
- Reduced desire to roam in search of a mate, which also lowers escape behavior
- Less urine-marking and mounting behavior
- Lower likelihood of prostate issues
- Decreased risk of testicular cancer
Choosing to spay or neuter your pet can lead to a happier, healthier life for them and a more harmonious relationship with you!

Timely Surgeries are Important…
The ideal timeline for spay or neuter surgery can vary based on your pet’s breed, sex, and species. At Family Vet Services, we generally recommend spaying or neutering most pets after their last vaccine cycle, typically around 6 months of age. However, some pets may benefit from having the procedure done earlier or later. For example, female pets that are spayed before their first heat cycle are less likely to develop mammary gland tumors later on. Since some kittens can go into heat as early as 4 months, we advise scheduling surgery for them when they are at least 6 months old to minimize future health risks.
On the other hand, larger breed dogs often benefit from waiting longer for their surgery due to developmental considerations. These dogs are typically spayed or neutered between 10 to 12 months of age.
